Basic Dinner Rolls

I made these for a dinner party I had last week.

I always like to have a bread option when I serve dinner. I don’t know why, it’s just what I do.

I used to buy dinner rolls that you just have to bake. They were usually good, easy and quick.

Since I have started making bread, I make my own rolls. This gives them a special touch. It amazes me how many people are impressed by bread making. Actually, I guess I’m not, it isn’t always easy.

These were quite easy to make. Unfortunately, they did not rise as much as I would have liked.

So the rolls stayed pretty small. They did taste nice though.

They were a bit dense, probably from the lack of rising. They aren’t too sweet. They aren’t too dry.

So a nice basic roll. Nothing special, but with a little butter, very enjoyable.
DINNER ROLLS
1 Package Yeast
1/2 Cup Water
1/2 Cup Milk, Scalded
1/4 Cup Shortening
1 Tablespoon Sugar
2 Teaspoons Salt
1 Egg, Beaten
3 Cups Flour
Soften yeast in warm water. Combine milk, shortening, sugar, and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Add yeast and mix well. Blend in egg. Add flour and mix until dough is well blended. Place in a greased bowl, turn to coat. Cover and place in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Shape dough on a well floured surface into roll size balls. Let rise until light, about 1 1/2 hours. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes.
