Okay, so basically this is an old fashioned sloppy Joe recipe. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But I wouldn’t call them hamburgers.

Yes, there is hamburger in the recipe. But it doesn’t create a traditional hamburger.

The combination of ingredients was actually quite nice. And it has a little kick to it with the red pepper.

I used fresh tomatoes instead of canned. I had the fresh, so why not. I prefer fresh tomatoes anyway. They cooked down enough in my opinion in the 20 minutes.

The ketchup gives the dish the redness in color, as does the chili powder.

The flour thickens up the sauce a bit.

My mother used to “make” sloppy Joe’s as I was growing up. It consisted of hamburger and a can of Manwich sauce. Very boring, very basic.
This recipe was not boring or basic. It had great flavor, great color, and made enough to feed a crowd!
BARBECUED HAMBURGERS
3 Tablespoons Shortening
3 Pounds Ground Beef
3 Onions, Finely Chopped
1 Clove Garlic, Minced
1 Tablespoon Salt
1 1/2 Teaspoons Black Pepper
1/2 Teaspoon Red Pepper
2 Teaspoon Chili Powder
2 Teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce
1/4 Cup Flour
1 1/4 Cups Canned Tomatoes
3/4 Cup Ketchup
Melt shortening in a heavy skillet. Combine ground beef, onions and garlic. Cook until lightly browned. Add seasonings and flour. Add tomatoes and ketchup, mixing well Simmer 15 to 20 minutes. Spoon between split buns to serve.
