I remember fondly going to the mall as a teenager and getting an Orange Julius. It was the highlight of the trip sometimes.

Because of their appearance at the mall I had always assumed that Orange Julius started sometimes in the 80’s. So I was a little surprised to find the recipe in my Estate Sale Box.

So I did a little research and discovered that Orange Julius has actually been around since 1926.

Julius Freed opened an orange juice stand in 1926 on South Broadway in downtown Los Angels. Freed’s real estate broker made some suggestions on how Freed could improve his business by making a mixture to make the acid in the orange juice a little less bothersome to his customers stomachs. Freed began serving the drink which was frothy and creamy. His sales increased!

During the 1950’s and 60’s the Orange Julius was sold all over the United States at state and county fairs. The first freestanding Orange Julius stores were also beginning to open.

This is definitely one of the great things about this blog and the discovery of the recipes. I am learning so much about the history of products and ingredients in the Mid Century!

This recipe really does taste like the original Orange Julius. It is simple to put together and comes out very smooth and creamy. It was a great nostalgic moment for me!
Definitely worth a try!
